First Place Winner of the 2010 AGTA Spectrum Award for Business/Day Wear and the coveted 2009 Rising Star Award in Fine Jewelry, Ariane Zurcher creates one-of-a-kind and limited edition pieces that are as exquisitely crafted as they are utterly unique. An acclaimed designer and accomplished studio jeweler, her hands-on mastery is reflected in ultra-contemporary creations like the swirling galaxies of spun gold and delicately set gems in her Juno collection; organic forms echoing the bold flourishes of Art Nouveau in her Dauphine line; and the exotic Maori tribal art referenced in her transcendent Samadhi Collection.
“Sometimes I start with a detailed sketch which serves as a spring board for other discoveries as I begin to work with the metal and gems. Being a studio jeweler gives me the spontaneous freedom to fully explore all the creative possibilities of the original inspiration – and allows me to go in directions I could never have anticipated.”
"Inspiration can come from anywhere at any time. One of the wonderful things about being an artist is that you want to explore everything around you as well as your reaction to it. So for me, the act of creation has become less about what I like and more about what speaks to me – and how well I’m listening. I try to stay in tune to my emotional responses as much as my aesthetic or critical reactions. What I often find most rewarding is the unexpected encounter, something I see that alters my perspective, jolts me out of the known and familiar paths I’ve been following and takes me on a great adventure."
"Comfort is an essential quality, not an afterthought. My jewelry is designed to be worn as an extension of the body, like a second skin. I want it to move fluidly with you as you move, so the jewelry and the wearer reflect each other, like your favorite clothing, your best friend, something that’s been a part of your life forever, something that’s a part of you."
"Today’s women are doing so many different things in their lives – working, parenting, socializing, charity work, sports, recreation – sometimes all in the same day! Jewelry shouldn’t get in the way of what you want to do – it should be a part of your varied lifestyle. I created the Transitions Collection to accommodate every whim, mood and occasion, from the most formal event to a breezy afternoon gallery-hopping. In the same way I want women to feel their jewelry is an extension of themselves – effortlessly comfortable and unique – I want them to be able to go into work carrying a 75 carat amethyst in their handbag so they can transform their necklace into a fabulous evening look without having to go home and change. It should be that easy and fun while still being utterly elegant."
"There’s a warmth in gold – a depth – I find irresistible. Different metals and gemstones have their own personality that demands respect as much as the design or creative process. I need to connect with these idiosyncrasies as if I were making a new friend. Then the working process transcends things like shaping and sculpting, trying to bend the material to your predetermine notions – it becomes a true collaboration."
