Making Waves is part of a series, which I began calling the “Rock Series” because each of the designs, feature rocks as in River Rocks, Rock Gardens, Waves: A Phone/Glasses Case, and Waves: A Scissor Case. The inspiration for each, involves rocks of some kind. This last design was inspired by rocks, water, waves and how water reflects what’s surrounding it.

Description

Making Waves: A fully lined, drawstring bag using linen as the base and wool for the shapes, began as a “Stitch Along with Ariane” and featured weekly Zoom Classes. A group of determined, enthusiastic and delightful hand stitchers stitched this project together. We had SO much fun!

The finished bag is 12″ x 14 1/2″ and is fully lined, making it ideal for carrying a project you’re working on while travelling! Whenever I’m inspired by something it becomes less about the actual thing that is inspiring me and more a place to begin exploring. Rather than attempt to render actual rocks and water, each element serves as a jumping off point. The inspiration fades into the background as the design takes shape. Water is less about water and more about light, the refraction of light on water and the way water serves as a mirror for all that surrounds it. The rocks become small oases where I explore color and composition, using thread and stitches to accentuate dimension, depth, shape and color. And in the end, I have an item I can actually use! Throughout these instructions I have used hyperlinks, which will take you to the YouTube video I made demonstrating the stitches and techniques used to make this drawstring bag. Each hyperlink will show up as a highlighted text. Click on the highlighted word(s) and you will be taken to the appropriate video. I have also sourced most of the items you will need to make this project. Click on each item’s hotlink to see what I used or recommend.
